Hedging
Taking an offsetting position to reduce the risk of an existing one.
A hedge dampens exposure to an adverse move, for example shorting an index against a long book or buying a put to protect a stock. It trades some upside or pays a cost in exchange for lower risk, and is about managing exposure, not predicting direction.
