Market maker
A participant that continuously quotes both bid and ask to provide liquidity.
Market makers earn the spread by standing ready to buy at the bid and sell at the ask, profiting from flow rather than direction. Their quotes are the liquidity retail orders fill against, and they manage the inventory risk of holding what they are handed.
