Futures contract

A standardized agreement to buy or sell an asset at a set price on a future date.

Futures are exchange-traded, leveraged, and marked to market daily, letting traders hedge or speculate on everything from indices to oil. Standardized size and expiry make them liquid, but daily settlement and leverage mean small moves hit margin quickly.
