Liquidation

A forced close of a leveraged position when its margin is exhausted.

When a leveraged trade's loss eats through the maintenance margin, the exchange closes it automatically to prevent a negative balance. In thin or fast markets, clustered liquidations can cascade, pushing price further and triggering still more.
